MENGERSEN
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ernest Mengersen on July 20, 2009 at the Linden Nursing Home at
the age of 64 years. Ernest was born June 18, 1945 in Yellowknife, NWT. His two greatest passions in life were insects and
stamps. Ernest had the joy of teaching his "hobby" of entomology and insect taxonomy for 28 years to students who held
him in high esteem. When Ernest left the classroom, he switched his passion to stamp collecting and its many intricacies.
He served his community through involvement with the Mountain View 4-H Dairy Club, Horizon School Board, Special
Olympics 5-Pin Bowling and the formation of the Alberta Lepidoptera Guild. He proudly hosted the 2003 North American
Lepidopterist Conference at Olds College with Entomologists in attendance from around the world. Ernest co-authored
"Insect Pests of the Prairies". Ernest will be remembered as the "Moth Man" with his Dodge "Moth Mobile" and as the early
morning "bottle" collector for Olds. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 41 years, Karen; four children Michael, Sarah
(Joe) Shandera , Sherwood Park, Matthew, Edmonton and Mark, Olds; grandsons Kieren and Talon Shandera; sister
Rose Marie Fleming and her children and grandchildren, all of Terrace, B.C. and step-brother Ted Bobb (Carol), Smithers,
B.C.. As well, he will be missed by his in-laws, Al and Laura Petersen, Salem, Oregon and sister-in-laws, Peggy Stockwell,
San Diego, California and Suzanne Bradshaw (Ken), Phoenix, Arizona. He was predeceased by his father August
Mengersen in 1956 and his mother Johanna (Poetzsch) Mengersen-Bobb in 1984. Memorial services were held on
Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Olds Church of the Nazarene, with Reverend Darlene Hyatt officiating.
Interment was held on Friday, July 24, 2009 at the Olds Cemetery. Family and friends released Painted Lady butterflies in
memory of Ernest and his love of insects. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Linden Nursing
Home or Special Olympics Olds & District. Heartland Funeral Services Ltd, Olds, entrusted with arrangements.
