The Day I Met Bill Reid

Many years ago, when I was in my senior year at The Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr School of Art & Design), I
walked into my etching class and there was a new student.  The man, in his mid-50's with slightly greying hair sat at a tall side
desk etching something (which turned out to be silver jewelry in an exquisite Haida design).  Our teacher, Orville Fisher spoke
to him and when the man returned the comment I was surprised at the deep resonance of his voice.  The teacher then
introduced him as Bill Reid.  My mind immediately made a connection to a familiar voice from my past.  I walked over to the
new student and blurted out - "Bill Reid?  Oh, are you the Bill Reid who read the 10:00 o'clock news on CBC?"  I explained
that as a child this was a nightly occurrence in our family as my dad faithfully listened to the nightly CBC news.

"Yes, I am."  Bill said, and also, "My god, that makes me feel so old."  (Radio announcer was his previous career and he was
now moving into realizing his other passion which became jewelry design, film making and carving.

So, it WAS the Bill Reid, former CBC radio announcer and soon to become the great Haida carver and Canadian artist that
we know of today.  What an honour to have known him.
